FAIRHOPE, Ala. — The James P. Nix Center and the Area Agency on Aging are cosponsoring, “Living Well Alabama-Better Choice: Better Health Program” at the Nix Center beginning in March.

The free health education program is designed for people with one or more chronic illnesses, according to a city of Fairhope news release.

When the complications of a chronic disease arise, things become even more challenging, so the Area Agency on Aging wants to demystify the process by offering local seniors a six-week, interactive class aimed at individuals or family caregivers of people facing the prospect of living with cancer, stroke, heart disease and other long-term illnesses, the release stated.

The class will be held weekly for six weeks on each of the Fridays from 9:30 a.m. until noon beginning on Friday, March 25 and ending on Friday, April 29th.

The course is facilitated by two leaders, Nathell Dian and Susan Brown, who are trained in chronic disease self-management. The program content includes: developing decision-making and problem-solving skills, developing and maintaining a long-term exercise program, fatigue management, dealing with anger, depression and other negative emotions, cognitive management of pain and stress, communication with family/friends/physicians, using prescribed medication appropriately, healthy eating, making informed treatment decisions and advance directives.

Anyone interested in attending should register by Wednesday, March 23 at the Nix Center.

Preregistration is required and class size is limited. Refreshments will be served during the classes.
