DAPHNE, Ala. — The cause of a fire that charred eight units at an apartment complex Wednesday is still a mystery, according to officials.

The blaze — which began at around 4 a.m. at Lake Forest Apartments, 500 Jackson St. — reportedly began on the first floor of a vacant unit with no electricity, Daphne Fire Chief Bo White said.

Fire Marshal Chip Martin said foul play seems unlikely.

“The cause for the fire is still undetermined,” Martin said.

“At this point we don’t think it was deliberate.”

A tenant reported the fire at around 4 a.m.; about 20 firefighters — including all Daphne firefighters and some Spanish Fort and Fairhope firefighters — arrived at the complex moments later.

Fire workers doused the flames within two hours, White said.

Firefighters contained the fire to the building where the blaze started, which contained eight apartments. Four units were occupied; four were vacant, White said.

A firefighter fell approximately 12 feet when a floor on the second level crumbled, according to White.

The fireman was taken to Industrial Health Clinic where he was treated for minor injuries.

“The firefighter’s injuries included a sprained calf muscle and a scrape on the chin,” White said. “He is fine now.”
