Annie Loree Carter, 86, a native and lifelong resident of Lillian, Ala., died Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at home after a long and hard-fought battle with Alzheimer’s. Mrs. Carter passed peacefully surrounded by her children.
She was the second oldest of seven daughters born to Tom and Sadie Gilley.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Samuel Carter Sr.; and sister, Tommie Quinn.
Mrs. Carter was employed by the Baldwin County Board of Education as a bus driver and cafeteria manager for 38 years. She was an active member of Eternal Life Church in Lillian until her health prevented her from participating
Mrs. Carter was a member of the Foley High School Athletic Hall of Fame. She was selected by the Smithsonian Institute to be a part of the group known as “The Best Cooks of Baldwin County” being the “Best Cook” for Elberta. Her recipes were published in “Key Ingredients,” cooking along the Gulf Coast cookbook.
She is survived by her children, Sam (Barbara) Carter Jr., Carolyn (Robert) Hertel, Penny (Nathan) Campbell, Alice (Loren) Korhonen; 10 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; three great-great-great-grandchildren, five sisters, Elizabeth, Lucille, Eldona, Nancy and Sandra; loving nieces, nephews, family and friends who will miss her dearly.
Visitation will be 4-6 p.m. Saturday, March 5 at Pine Rest Funeral Home in Foley.
Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 6, with visitation begining at 1 p.m. at Eternal Life Church in Lillian, Ala. and internment to follow at Gilley Memorial Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations are made to Eternal Life Church for Poplar Point Camp Scholarships.
