Alice Lee Hurkett died February 22, 2023, at the age of 94, in Mobile, Alabama, with her son, Duncan Hurkett, by her side.  Alice was born in January 1929 in Detroit, Michigan, to Elizabeth Kilpatrick and Russell Marston. Her childhood was spent in Cape Cod and Connecticut during the Great Depression. She attended Principia College, Illinois and later returned to Essex, Connecticut where she married Jay Jewett.  They had two children, Dana, and Duncan.  In 1960, Alice divorced. She later married Jack Hurkett, with whom son, John Hurkett, was born.

The family moved around the country during Jack’s career as a head librarian, living in Clinton, Connecticut, Westerly, Rhode Island, Niagara Falls, New York, Iowa City, Iowa and Urbandale, Iowa. In Westerly, Alice ran a daycare service, and in Urbandale, Alice worked as a saleswoman in the local Younkers Furniture Department. After Jack retired, he and Alice moved to Fairhope, Alabama to join her retired parents. Alice worked part-time in a local toy store there.

Alice was the most loving, caring, and generous mother who will be deeply missed by her daughter and two sons. To all who knew her, Alice was friendly, cheerful, and easy to get along with, no matter the circumstances.

To her mother, Alice was a faithful and loving daughter and companion until her passing at age ninety-five.  Alice gave her the best of care, while also interacting in the community where she continued to make her home after the passing of her parents and husband.

Alice lived in many places: Michigan, Quincy and Centerville, Massachusetts; Essex, Westbrook, and Clinton, Connecticut; Westerly, Rhode Island; Niagara Falls, New York; Iowa City and Urbandale, Iowa; Lacey and Bothell, Washington; and lastly Fairhope and Mobile, Alabama.

Alice leaves behind her daughter, Dana Hurkett and sons, John Hurkett (Fairhope, Alabama), and Duncan Hurkett and his wife, Valerie (Bothell, Washington); six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. In addition, her brother, Peter Marston, and his wife, Gem (Columbia, Connecticut); four nephews and six nieces; first cousins, Ret. Admiral Wm. Martin (San Diego, California) and Betsey Creveling Dorell. She is preceded in death by her husband, Jack Hurkett; two brothers, Howard Marston (wife, Beth) their daughter, and Thomas Marston (wife Marion); her niece, Linda Marston Bain; aunts, Lucy Lee Martin and Martha Creveling, and grandson, Matthew Abel.
