Alabama State Parks will ring in 2026 by inviting residents and visitors to step outside and hit the trails during the annual First Day Hikes on Thursday, Jan. 1, offering guided outings at more than a dozen parks across the state.
The tradition, part of a nationwide effort held in all 50 states, encourages people to start the new year outdoors while experiencing some of Alabama’s most scenic landscapes. From sunrise walks to sunset treks, the hikes highlight the diversity of terrain found throughout the state park system.
“The First Day Hikes are the perfect way to start the new year,” said Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Commissioner Chris Blankenship. “Our State Parks are home to hundreds of miles of the very best trails found anywhere in America, and First Day Hikes are a chance to start the new year off right. For anyone who’s never been on a First Day Hike at an Alabama State Park, consider this your invitation. We want to see you on the trails this year.”
Along the Gulf Coast, Gulf State Park will host its Annual First Day Hike from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Orange Beach Sportsplex in Orange Beach. The guided nature walk is open to all ages and experience levels and is designed to help participants welcome the new year outdoors while enjoying fresh air, movement and community. The event is free, and participants are encouraged to dress for the weather and bring water. Registration is available at https://reserve.alapark.com/register/annual-first-day-hike-2026.
Later in the day, Meaher State Park in Spanish Fort will offer a First Day Hike titled Sunset on the Delta from 4:30 to 7 p.m. The guided walk through the Mobile-Tensaw Delta focuses on scenic views and the area’s unique ecosystem. The relaxed pace makes the hike suitable for families and participants of all skill levels. The hike is free for campground guests and children 12 and under, while adults who are not campground guests pay $3. Registration is required at https://reserve.alapark.com/register/first-day-hike--sunset-on-the-delta.
Volunteers and park personnel will lead hikes throughout the state, creating a low-stress, family-friendly environment for newcomers and experienced hikers alike. The events also coincide with the Year of Alabama Trails, a statewide initiative led by the Alabama Tourism Department that celebrates Alabama’s growing network of trails and promotes outdoor recreation for all ages.
Park officials note that winter weather could affect outdoor plans, and advance registration ensures participants receive real-time updates and notifications. Hikers are advised to bring water or sports drinks, snacks or meals as needed and hiking poles if desired. Sturdy, closed-toe shoes or hiking boots and season-appropriate clothing are recommended for comfort and safety.
