Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen is throwing his support behind the Make Elections Great Again Act, a federal election reform package sponsored by Rep. Bryan Steil, R-Wis. Allen says the bill would nationalize election integrity measures Alabama already enforces and credits with maintaining secure and transparent elections.
The legislation, known as the MEGA Act, is moving through the federal legislative process and is backed by U.S. House Republicans according to a news release. Supporters argue it would strengthen election security nationwide and restore public confidence in the voting process by setting uniform standards across all 50 states.
“The Make Elections Great Again Act represents so much of what I have advocated for and implemented since becoming Alabama’s Secretary of State. I fully support the U.S. House GOP as they further President Trump’s agenda of defending American elections against liberal policies,” Allen said in the release.
Under the proposal, states would be required to adopt election integrity policies that mirror Alabama law. Those provisions include mandatory photo identification for voters, verification of U.S. citizenship for voter registration, routine voter roll maintenance and a requirement that mail-in ballots be received by the close of polls on Election Day.
The bill would also mandate the use of paper ballots, ban ballot harvesting, prohibit ranked choice voting and eliminate universal vote-by-mail systems.
“In Alabama, we take election security very seriously. We require valid photo ID to vote, have bans on ballot harvesting and ranked choice voting, and only use paper ballots and tabulators that can never be connected to the internet,” Allen said.
Alabama has long been cited by conservative lawmakers as a model for election administration, particularly after recent national debates over absentee voting, ballot collection practices and election timelines. Allen has repeatedly emphasized the state’s focus on in-person voting and strict controls over absentee ballots.
“We have strong protections for the absentee voting process because I believe in Election Day, not election month. The Make Elections Great Again Act would require all 50 states to follow Alabama’s lead and ensure that their elections are as fair, secure, and transparent as our own.”
