Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo Welcomes New Guinea Singing Dogs

Gulf Shores, AL – The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo is excited to welcome Yugi
and Jacoby, New Guinea singing dogs to the zoo family.

Yugi and Jacoby are both around 8 years old. The pair arrived at the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo in March and have been working with keepers to adjust to their new surroundings.

According to keepers, Yugi, the female, is the braver of the two and was the first to approach keepers, with a little food motivation. Jacoby, the male, has a very sweet disposition.

Both dogs like to sing for their keepers as they approach in the mornings, and both enjoy getting new dirt to
dig in and the use of hunting lures as enrichment.

The New Guinea singing dogs have been around for a long time, fossil records of the species date back at least 6,000 years ago. They originated on the island of New Guinea.

These dogs are
most closely related to the Australian dingo. They are known for their distinctive vocalizations similar to that of a humpback whale.

Currently, there are only 200-300 of the species left in the world.

You can visit Yugi and Jacoby, in the Big Cat area of the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo, daily from 9 am – 4 pm. Learn more at www.alabamagulfcoastzoo.org.
