BAY MINETTE, Ala. — A project to

expand the Bay Minette Municipal Airport seems to be gliding

along.

So much so, that it has moved

into phase two.

“There’s a lot of dirt being

moved,” Bay Minette Mayor Jamie Tillery said at a recent North

Baldwin Utilities Board meeting.

As previously reported, Bay

Minette Aviation began work on creating a parallel taxiway in

September in an effort to reduce traffic on the runways. Doing so

would allow traffic to taxi on one 5,500-by-80-foot runway, while

the other would enable planes to take off and land without

congestion.

The first phase of the $2 million

project, which is co-funded by the Federal Aviation Administration

and Alabama Department of Transportation, is complete. As

previously reported, It provides the main stretch of the taxiway on

the north of the runway, running east from the fixed-base operator

area.

Phase two, which is currently

under way, consists of construction the taxiway north of the runway

and west from the fixed-base operator. As previously reported, that

will be followed by two subsequent phases to the project. They

include providing drainage and electrical lines.

Tillery said she is pleased with

the pace of the endeavor.

“Work to improve the airport is

moving along,” she told the NBU Board.

As previously reported, the Bay

Minette Municipal Airport is one of the busiest in Alabama, with

300 planes taking off and landing at the location on a daily

basis.
