ADAI accepting applications for historic Alabama farm recognition programs

The Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries is accepting applications for its 2026 Century & Heritage Farm and Bicentennial Farm programs through Friday, Aug. 28.

The department and the Alabama Historical Commission launched the Century & Heritage Farm programs in 1976 to recognize family farms that have played a significant role in Alabama's agricultural and historical legacy.

A Century Farm must have remained in the same family for at least 100 years, include at least 40 acres, be owned by the applicant or nominee and have current agricultural activities.

A Heritage Farm must have operated continuously as a family farm for at least 100 years and include significant historical and agricultural features, including one or more structures that are at least 40 years old. The farm also must include at least 40 acres owned and operated by the applicant, who must reside in Alabama. Many farms qualify for both Century and Heritage recognition.

More than 750 farms statewide have been recognized through the Century & Heritage Farm program for their longstanding contributions to Alabama agriculture.

The department also is accepting applications for the Bicentennial Farm program, which honors farms that have been owned and operated by the same family for at least 200 years. Eligible farms must include at least 40 acres, be owned by an Alabama resident and have current agricultural activities. Seventeen farms have been recognized through the program to date.

According to ADAI, the programs recognize farms that have endured for generations and helped build the state's agricultural foundation. If a farm meets the qualifications, historical documentation such as photographs, deeds and records will be preserved in the state archives.

Farm owners who believe they qualify for the 2026 Century & Heritage Farm or Bicentennial Farm programs can apply at https://agi.alabama.gov/, email Amy Belcher at amy.belcher@agi.alabama.gov or call (334) 240-7126.

Applicants must complete the appropriate Ownership Registration Form and submit it to ADAI by Friday, Aug. 28.
