DAPHNE, Ala. — A major expansion, guest speakers and a slew of activities are on the horizon at the Daphne Public Library, staff members said at Coffee with the Mayor Thursday.

Tonja Young, library director, explained that a 16,000-square-foot expansion would make room for a large college and adult research area and would give teens and elementary-school children a larger area for reading material.

“We also want an auditorium for things like our summer reading program,” Young said. The auditorium could also be used for lectures, banquets and rentals.

She expressed the need for expansion in numbers. For instance, the library had 250,000 items checked out last year, she said.

“We service 15,000 to 16,000 people per month; there are 18,000 in the community,” she added.

In other business, Deborah Norris, adult librarian, said the Jubilee Mornings series — a monthly gathering featuring local authors — will continue Wednesday at 10 a.m.

Melissa Applegate, of the Alabama Coastal Foundation, will give a presentation on the organization’s role in improving area coastlines.
