A dozen Daphne athletes sign

DAPHNE, Ala. — Twelve student athletes at Daphne High signed football and baseball scholarship papers at Trojan Hall on the DHS campus on National Signing Day Wednesday.

Daphne athletic director and head football coach Glenn Vickery said it was a special day for this group who had accomplished a lot in their tenure at the school.

“It's another great day at Daphne High School,” he said. “We have a lot of great days here.

“It's always good to see so many kids who have worked so hard to accomplish things go on to college and fulfill their dreams and also save their families some money. We have a lot of people from the community also who have helped them get to get to this point. Parents, teachers, administrators all help make it possible.”

The Trojans claimed the 2010 6A Football State Championship in December along with the 2010 Region title. This group of seniors also claimed the 2008 Region Crown and finished their careers with a three-year overall record of 31-8 and a 6A Region 2 record of 16-3 since their sophomore season.

Signing to play football:

Defensive Back Chris Hill (6-0, 185) signed with Northwestern Oklahoma State University. Hill's 3rd-and-goal pass deflection against Hoover in the state title game was just one of his most memorable plays, Vickery said. Hill had 61 tackles and one interception.

Running Back Tyrell Holloway (5-9, 190) also signed with Northwestern Oklahoma State University. He was the Trojans' leading rusher with 172 carries for 1,296 rushing yards, 7.5 yards per rush, 15 catches for 114 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns.

Defensive Back Zach Houston (6-2, 170) signed with Alabama State University. He had 38 tackles, one fumble recovery and five interceptions.

Wide Receiver Justin Jackson (6-4, 190) signed with the University of Pittsburgh. He had eight rushes for 42 rushing yards, 27 catches, 544 receiving yards and six touchdowns.

Wide Receiver Israel Lamprakes (6-0, 175) signed with Southern Illinois University. He had 110 career receptions for 1701 yards and 10 touchdown receptions, 103 career rushes for 872 Yards with 9 Touchdown runs. Including return yards, he collected 2579 all-purpose career yards with 19 touchdowns.

Defensive Back Kyndal Minniefield (5-11, 180) signed with the University of Buffalo (New York). He had two interceptions in the state championship game and collected 39 tackles, 20 assists, 3 fumble recoveries and four interceptions for the year.

Linebacker Michael Pierce (6-1, 255) signed with Tulane University in New Orleans. He was named the 2010 State Championship Game MVP and finished the year with 89 tackles, 38 assists, 2 fumble recoveries and 3 sacks.

Linebacker Rodrick Tate (5-9, 175) signed with Garden City (Kansas) Community College. He was named the 2010 Great American Rivalry Game (Foley) MVP, led the Trojans in tackles with 133 on the year, had one recovery, one interception and six sacks.

Linebacker Kevin Wilson (6-3, 225) signed with the Knights of Central Florida University in Orlando.

Running Back/Linebacker Levunte Pittman (5-11, 215) signed with Northland Community College in Thief River Falls, Minnesota. He re-enrolled at Daphne High in January after playing his senior year at Pensacola High which made it to the 2010 3A Florida Semi-Finals with a 13-1 Record. He lettered at Daphne as a junior and sophomore.

Signing to play baseball:

Russ Mosley (6-0, 215) and Kyle Reese (5-11, 175) both signed to play next year for Alabama Southern Community College in Monroeville.

Mosley is a four-year baseball letterman at third base and pitcher. He also led the football Trojans at quarterback for two years and passed for 233 yards against Hoover in the state title game.

Reese is a two-year baseball letterman at short-stop and pitcher. He brings a .350 batting average into his senior season.
