9/11 blood drive set in Spanish Fort

SPANISH FORT, Ala. — Spanish Fort Fire and Rescue will host a Sept. 11 memorial blood drive tomorrow to honor lives lost during the terrorist attacks on New York City’s World Trade Center and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.

The drive, hosted in concert with the Alabama and Central Gulf Coast Region of the American Red Cross, begins at 9 a.m.

The event is set for Fire Station 1 across from City Hall on Spanish Fort Boulevard. The event will conclude at 3 p.m.

“Obviously Sept. 11 is a day with special meaning, and what better way to honor those who lost their lives that day than by donating to support those in need of blood and blood components. Please consider donating and supporting the American Red Cross' efforts,” said Spanish Fort Fire Chief Roger Few.

Evan Duffy, senior communication specialist for the Alabama and Central Gulf Coast Region, said the anniversary is both a somber occasion and gentle reminder for the “constant need for blood in our country.”

“Giving blood during the month of September serves as a way of honoring those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks in 2001 by passing on the gift of life to someone in need. The events of that day are also a reminder that disaster, whether natural or man-made, can strike at any time, without warning,” he said.

Duffy said one way citizens can minimize the impact of such events is to “remain vigilant and be prepared by giving blood on a regular basis. That’s simply one of the best ways to maintain a safe and stable blood supply, and those who give blood regularly are heroes and patriots.”
