70 players participate in tennis classic

GULF SHORES, Ala. — The 15th annual Gulf Shores Winter Tennis Classic began play on Feb. 7 at the city’s tennis facility with the finals played on Sunday.

Seventy players participated in the tournament, which was divided into A, B, C men’s and women’s doubles.

The men’s A finalist team of Aaron Bauer and Bart Middleton defeated Steve Arnold and Scott Myrick.

The men’s B title was captured by Rick Hilley and Jim Willis, who defeated Chuck Clarey and Dave Krajicak.

The men’s C champion’s team of Jon Kent and Ken Sutter defeated Bob Heaps and Charels Weidendorf.

In the women’s A doubles the team of Beverly Billingsley and Monica Davidson defeated Barbie Doherty and Laura Rast for the title.

In the women’s B division Dyan Fentress and Chelsie Larkin defeated Rose Townsend and Michelle Williams.

The championship for the C division went to the team of Kay Bradley and Barbara Collins, who defeated Johanna Phillips and Suzette Taylor.

The Gulf Shores Winter Tennis Classix is sponsored by the city of Gulf Shores, the Gulf Shores Tennis Club, Winn-Dixie, and the Alabama Gulf Coast Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Each player received a tournament shirt, breakfast snacks and a luncheon.

Jean Coberly, tennis coordinator for the city of Gulf Shores, presented awards to the winners in each division.
