From public safety careers and creative writing to marine life, classic rock and gospel music, there’s no shortage of ways to fill the calendar this weekend.
Whether you’re looking to learn something new, discover your next career, flex your writing muscles or simply enjoy a night out, Baldwin County has plenty of options — and you don’t even have to fight over the remote.
So grab a friend, mark your calendar and make some plans. From Thursday’s daytime career fair to a weekend packed with music, trivia and storytelling, there’s something for just about every interest. Here’s a look at what’s happening around the area.

What: Baldwin County 9-1-1 will host a Public Safety Career Fair, giving community members an opportunity to explore careers in emergency services and public safety while connecting directly with recruiters and hiring staff. Representatives from agencies across Baldwin County and Alabama are expected to attend, including organizations in law enforcement, fire services, emergency medical services, 9-1-1 communications and other public safety fields. Attendees can explore career opportunities, speak with recruiters and hiring staff and learn more about application processes, training requirements and career paths. Organizers encourage participants to bring copies of their résumés and prepare questions about available positions and career opportunities. What: Writers and aspiring storytellers will have an opportunity to explore creativity, writing and narrative through a five-week workshop series led by international playwright and storyteller Cosette Bolt. The series will feature guided writing exercises and activities designed to help participants develop their writing skills while having fun with the community. Week one, “The Introduction to Creativity you wish you had in Grade School,” will be held Aug. 27. Week two, “foundation to build a story on,” will be held Sept. 3. Week three, “Have a Play,” will be held Sept. 10. Week four, “Interrogating the tools for narrative success,” will be held Sept. 17. Week five, “Trust your Broccoli,” will be held Sept. 24. Each session begins at 5:45 p.m. The series is described as a five-week exploration of “all things writing to live and living to write.” Participants will take part in a series of exercises intended to strengthen their writing skills while providing an enjoyable community experience. Price: Drop-in admission is $35. Student drop-in admission is $20. A five-class pass is $150 and a student five-class pass is $100. Participants also may choose a “Sponsor a Learner Add on” by adding the price of a drop-in or class pass to pay it forward.
What: The Alabama Coastal Foundation and Healthy Gulf will host an evening celebrating the marine life found along the Alabama Gulf Coast. The event will feature short films, educational displays and presentations by local advocates focused on sea turtles, whales, manatees and other marine animals. What: Expect Excellence Music Department will present “Dream On Vol. 4,” featuring musicians and singers from across the Gulf Coast performing a 20-song set list of classic rock favorites from the 1970s through the 1990s. The show will include songs such as “Juke Box Hero,” “Purple Rain” and “Bohemian Rhapsody” and pay tribute to artists including Prince, Michael Jackson and Steve Perry. The production features a 23-member cast of dancers, vocalists and instrumentalists. Doors open one hour before showtime. What: Local author T. Jensen Lacey will present “The Power of the Written Word.” Lacey is the author of 23 books and more than 900 articles for newspapers and magazines. He has appeared as a guest on NPR’s “Fresh Air” 11 times and The Grand Ole Opry Radio twice. His stories have appeared 21 times in the New York Times Bestselling “Chicken Soup for the Soul” series. During the 30-45 minute presentation, Lacey will discuss local history, including the “Roundhouse” or “The Hermit House” story, and how the written word can be used to transform lives, improve health and positively influence others. What: The Knights of Columbus Fr. Ryan Council 2737 will host its 12th annual live Team Trivia Fundraiser. More than 40 teams are expected to compete for $1,050 in cash prizes, with net proceeds supporting the Knights of Columbus and its local charitable initiatives. Dinner will be served from 6-6:45 p.m. and will feature Southern Bayou Alfredo with chicken, shrimp and sausage prepared by Chef Bob Coppoletta. Trivia begins at 7:15 p.m. Teams of up to six players will compete by answering 49 trivia questions. Cash prizes are $600 for first place, $300 for second place and $150 for third place. An optional 50/50 Split-the-Pot Raffle also will be available. Individuals without a team will be assigned to one. Guests who want to attend the dinner and watch the trivia competition without participating are welcome. Attendees must be at least 13 years old and teenagers must be accompanied by an adult.
