FAIRHOPE, Ala. — Local police on Monday released the names of three people shot to death Saturday in the Barnwell community, south of Fairhope.

William Odel Wood II, 37, the man thought to be responsible for the killings, was himself shot and killed Sunday by law enforcement officers during a high-speed chase in Mobile.

“This is possibly the worst homicide event in Fairhope’s history,” Fairhope Police Department Sgt. Craig Sawyer said Monday.

Jesse Warrick, 70, his wife, Louise, 67, and James Anthony Tucker, 20, were killed by gunshots from a high-powered rifle allegedly fired by William Wood at about 11:15 p.m. Saturday, according to a FPD news release.

Wood’s ex-wife, Rebecca Melonie Wood, 34, was also injured during the shootings but remains in stable condition at an area hospital, the release stated.

Tucker was the grandson of the Warricks and had been living at their Barnwell house in the 10000 block of U.S. Highway 98 with Melonie Wood, whom he had been dating, according to some accounts.

The house is located next to Speed Tech Automotive, a business owned by the Warricks.

Some media have suggested motives for the shootings may have involved retaliation for the relationship between Wood’s ex-wife and the Warricks’ grandson, or for reasons involving the accidental death of Wood’s 4-year-old son, Austin, who was struck and killed by a vehicle last month in front of the Warricks’ house.

Local police have not commented on any possible motives.

Some media outlets have also reported that Wood was arrested in February on first-degree burglary and attempted murder charges in Saraland, where he was released on bail, and his case bound over to a grand jury earlier this month.

Wood was identified as a suspect in the shootings by his ex-wife, according to a FPD news release.

Following a manhunt, Wood was located in south Mobile County Sunday afternoon. During a high-speed chase he was shot to death by Mobile deputies near the interchange of I-65 and I-10.

Wood fired the first shots, and no other people were injured during the chase, according to the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office.

Mobile County District Attorney John Tyson said Wood used both a high-powered rifle and a pistol during the chase. Tyson said an investigation into the shooting is ongoing, but that the shooting of Wood appears to be justified.
