A delegation of 21 Bayside Academy eighth grade students spent Jan. 23 writing, debating and defending bills at the 32nd Annual Alabama YMCA’s Junior Youth Legislature at the Alabama State House in Montgomery.

Students competed alongside middle school students from across the state in challenges of leadership, preparation and civic engagement.

Several Bayside students earned recognition throughout the event in a variety of titles and accolades.

Carlisle Mosteller was named an Outstanding Delegate and Eleanor Laymon was elected and served as Assistant Floor Leader.

Wade Bishop, Andrew Ray, William Derrenbacher and Eli Harcourt had their bill selected as one of the first presented for debate. James Savage and David Green also had their bill selected for debate.

Ana Benassi Monegatto and Hinleigh Hall, accompanied by Anne Chapline Chew and Mary Kathryn Jacobs, debated and successfully passed their bill in the chamber.
