MALBIS, Ala.—An early morning two-car accident on Interstate 10 between the Malbis and Loxley exits left a Louisiana woman dead and an Orange Beach man in jail, facing murder charges, according to a news release from the Alabama Department of Public Safety.
Jonathan W. Cook, 36, of Orange Beach reportedly drove his 2002 Toyota 4Runner into the back of a 1996 Ford Explorer while driving on the interstate. The Explorer was driven by 56-year-old Gary Arnold, of Farmersville, La., the release said.
Alcohol and speed may have contributed to the accident, authorities said.
The collision ejected back seat-passenger Yvonne Carlo Arnold, 47, Gary Arnold’s sister, out of the vehicle as it overturned several times.
Yvonne Arnold reportedly wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, authorities said in the release.
Also in the car was Yvonne Arnold’s reported fiancé, Cedric Sampson, the release said.
The accident occurred at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday on I-10 at mile marker 40.5 between Loxley exit 44 and Malbis exit 38, the release said.
Gary Arnold and Sampson received injuries and were taken to the University of South Alabama Medical Center in Mobile. Both were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident, the release said.
Cook was also reported as wearing a seatbelt and sustained no injuries from the crash. He was taken to the Baldwin County jail and booked on murder charges, the release said.
