MOBILE, Alabama — One of Mobile’s oldest locally-owned grocery stores has announced the acquisition of two new stores in the Baldwin County area.
In a press release issued Thursday, Piggly Wiggly announced that it will be moving into what were previously Winn-Dixie stores in Robertsdale and Gulf Shores.
In a press release issued March 15, Southeastern Grocers, based in Jacksonville, Florida, announced the closing of 94 stores in seven states, including 57 Winn-Dixie stores, 10 in Alabama, including locations in Robertsdale, Gulf Shores, Daphne and the Schillinger Road location in Mobile.
“It’s hard to see a local titan like Winn-Dixie shut its doors, but we are excited to be able to allow the people of
Gulf Shores and Robertsdale to continue to shop local,” said General Manager Kamal Constantine.
Piggly Wiggly was the first true self-service grocery store, founded on Sept. 6, 1916, in
Memphis, Tennessee.
The Manning family opened their first grocery store in Mobile County in 1972, then purchased the existing
Baldwin County Piggly Wiggly stores in 2016. With the addition of these two stores, there will be 14
convenient locations on the Gulf Coast.
“Piggly Wiggly’s cost plus stores offers exceptionally low prices on your most trusted national grocery
brands, offering the highest quality standards in produce and fresh meat products,” according to the release. “We are your local farmer’s market. Our produce department carries a seasonal variety of the freshest local fruits and vegetables which are delivered fresh daily by local farmers. Piggly Wiggly offers fresh meat items such as certified Angus beef and USDA inspected beef and chicken products.”
Piggly Wiggly is planning to retain most of the associates from the Winn Dixie stores and accepting
applications at all of the Baldwin County Stores. You can apply online at wedigthepig.com/apply-here.
