Stewart earns Girl Scout Gold Award

Posted

Megan Stewart has been a Girl Scout with Troop 8306 in Bay Minette for 13 years. She earned her Bronze Award while in the 5th Grade at Delta Elementary as a Junior Scout and her Silver Award while in the 7th grade at Bay Minette Elementary as a Cadette Scout.

On Saturday, March 13, 2021, she received her Girl Scout Gold Award which is the highest award that a Girl Scout can earn.

When she became a freshman at Baldwin County High School she began the process to earn her Gold Award while being a Senior Scout. She had to come up with a project and go before the Gold Award Committee to show where her project would meet five key elements: root cause, leadership, measurability, sustainability and national/global link.

For her Gold Award project, Megan built an outdoor classroom at Camp Sid Edmond’s which is the Girl Scout camp located in Bay Minette. The outdoor classroom is a way that a large troop or multiple troops can sit together to work on projects or badges. She also incorporated a safety shed into the instructor’s platform to house all the swimming safety equipment. Megan’s original plan was to hold badge classes for the Cadette Wood Worker Badge.

Due to Covid-19 and the restrictions that were set in place, she had to create a YouTube video of the class. Because the video is on YouTube any Cadette Scout in any troop or area of the world can follow the video and earn this badge. The link to her video is: https:youtu.be/rhxTTPtwHEI

Megan is now an Ambassador Scout and senior at Baldwin County High School. She will graduate in May and will enlist in the U.S. Navy. Her future goal is to become an ER doctor. Megan is the daughter of Christine and Chip Stewart of Bay Minette. Her brother Charlie is an Eagle Scout who graduated from Baldwin County High School in 2019 and is a member of the U.S. Navy.
