Baldwin EMC Selects Youth Tour Leadership Scholarship Winners

Posted

Baldwin EMC has chosen four local students as recipients of the Baldwin EMC Youth Tour leadership scholarship. These high school juniors are: Kennedy Adams from Fairhope High School, Sage Givens from Robertsdale High School, Sophie Jernigan from Daphne High School, and Caroline White from Spanish Fort High School.

Traditionally, the National Rural Electric Cooperative Youth Tour program includes trips to Montgomery, Ala., and Washington, D.C., for students to enjoy an up-close look at statewide and national governments. This year, Baldwin EMC made the decision to offer the winners scholarships as an alternative to the usual calendar of events, which was cancelled in compliance with safety protocols and restrictions still in place as a result of COVID-19.

“While we’re disappointed to not be able to offer these students the travel opportunities this year, we’re excited to recognize these outstanding young leaders in a more financially rewarding and safe way,” says Baldwin EMC Youth Tour Coordinator Kim Frank. “It’s exciting for these students to have secured their first scholarship in their junior year. We hope this award will alleviate some of the pressure of future college expenses.”

Approximately 84 applicants submitted essays for scholarship consideration to the cooperative earlier this year. From those essays, 22 students were selected to complete virtual interviews by a panel of three judges.
