Where to volunteer or donate for Christmas meal and gift programs across Baldwin County

Posted

With the holiday season upon us, residents and early snowbirds might be looking for places to give to others in need or even volunteer their time for a day or two.

Below are a few places to look into for volunteering, donating or receiving services during this time.

Prodisee Pantry is a faith-based nonprofit community ministry providing emergency food and disaster relief, according to its website. From 9 to 11 a.m. on Dec. 3, 10 and 17, there will be a food distribution at 9315 Spanish Fort Blvd., and on Dec. 14 there will be distribution at the same time at Vaughn Elementary School 55260 CR 21 in Stockton. Dec. 24 is the only Tuesday that distributions will not be handed out in December. Deann Servos, executive director at Prodisee Pantry, said they are always open for volunteers but recommended calling ahead at (251) 626-1720 if you have a group. Servos said that even though Christmastime is known for the gifts, you can't forget about the food, "and we don't." The pantry does partner with different organizations, such as Toys 4 Tots and the Salvation Army, among other local organizations to cover the gifts.

Feeding the Gulf Coast's website states that it operates three branches of food banks located along the central Gulf Coast with facilities in Gulfport, Mississippi; Theodore; and Milton, Florida. During this time of year, Feeding the Gulf Coast regularly pre-boxes holiday food items for seniors in need. To confirm eligibility for the program, the Feeding the Gulf Coast website recommends calling the food bank at (888) 704-3663. Those interested in volunteering can fill out forms for the specific locations on their website at www.feedingthegulfcoast.org.

The Christian Service Center (CSC) is a volunteer agency serving low-income families living in Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Fort Morgan, according to the website. Two of the Christmastime programs offered by the CSC include the Christmas Cheer and Christmas Spirit programs. The Christmas Cheer program provides clients with food boxes and gifts for the children. Registration for the Christmas Cheer program can be completed at The Christian Service Center, 317 Dolphin Ave. in Gulf Shores, every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between 1 and 3 p.m. in November and December until Dec. 12. The Christmas Spirit program is for those who are not able to leave the house that might welcome a visit from a volunteer bringing gifts and goodies. Those who would like to recommend someone for this program can call the CSC at (251) 968-5256.

Ecumenical Ministries' website states that it provides aid to low-income families and individuals in Baldwin County, mostly focusing on the Eastern Shore and Foley communities. Ecumenical Ministries may have already closed their registration for Christmas gifts and boxed Christmas dinners, but it is not too late to donate and volunteer. Last year, 750 kids were able to receive gifts through their Christmas program, and several families were provided with meals. Forms for volunteering and making donations can be filled out on their official website at www.baldwinemi.org.

Blessing Boxes are scattered across Baldwin County and run on a "take what you need, leave what you can" basis for food items. The Blessing Boxes have a Facebook page called Blessed to Blessings Boxes for Baldwin with updates on when boxes have been filled, often with a picture attached to show what they have been filled with. There is also a regularly updated PDF that lists the location of all the Blessing Boxes in Baldwin County along with other resources for assistance in the county.
