Daphne senior Vic Moten, one of the most decorated pitchers in Trojan softball history, added another notch in her belt with her 1,000th career strikeout.

The Alabama signee, who was the 2024 Miss Softball and Alabama Gatorade Player of the Year winner, officially reached the mark in Class 7A Area 2 play against Foley on Thursday, March 27. Needing only one punchout, Moten struck out the first batter she faced on four pitches to record her 111th strikeout this season in a 17-0 victory and 1,000th for her career.

The milestone was nearly reached the game prior, against Saraland on March 26, where Moten struck out 19 Spartans over eight innings in a 2-1 loss. According to MaxPreps stats, that was her single-game high this season to go along with two 16-strikeout efforts, a 15-strikeout performance, a 13-strikeout appearance and two 11-strikeout outings so far.

The 13-strikeout performance came against the Saint James Trojans, the top-ranked team in Class 3A, where Moten retired all 21 batters in a row for a perfect game. That helped the Class 7A No. 3 Daphne Trojans win the Gulf Coast Classic II tournament in Gulf Shores last week where Moten racked up 42 strikeouts in the four bracket victories.

Over 54 innings pitched so far for Daphne, Moten had struck out 125 of the 189 batters she faced and allowed 18 hits, five runs — three of which were earned — and five walks, four of which came in one game against Baldwin County. Opponents owned a .099 batting average against Moten who carried a .039 ERA and an 8-2 pitching record.

Her 0.39 ERA ranked No. 36 on MaxPreps’ national leaderboards, and tops in Alabama entering play on March 29, and her 125 strikeouts checked in at No. 67 in the country and fifth in the state.

Offensively, she carried a .425 batting average through 40 at-bats and 53 plate appearances with 17 hits, including two doubles and four home runs, 14 RBIs and 13 runs scored to go along with an on-base plus slugging percentage of 1.333.

The Trojans entered a Saturday doubleheader against Prattville and Beauregard with a 20-3 overall record having gone 14-2 in the month of March which included an 11-game win streak. As Red Map winners as 7A state runners-up last season, Moten said Daphne’s goal this year is nothing short of a repeat trip to the state finals.

“I would say anything other than a Blue Map is a disappointment for us. It was the same feeling this year, we knew we could win a Blue Map but we just fell short,” Moten said in an interview on June 7, 2024. “Next year we're only going to build up and reboot and we'll come back two times stronger.”

A two-time Class 7A all-state selection, Moten also represented Baldwin County at the 2024 AHSAA North-South All-Star Game where she teamed up with Baldwin County’s Madilyn Byrd, a Florida Atlantic signee who also recently reached 1,000 career strikeouts, to throw a shutout in Game 1. Moten started the opener in the pitcher’s circle and collected six strikeouts compared to one hit over three innings then delivered a three-RBI double in Game 2 to help earn South MVP honors.
