Veterans honored in Loxley

LOXLEY, Alabama — The Town of Loxley and the Loxley Church of God’s J.O.Y. (Just Older Youth) senior adult ministry hosted a potluck fellowship and program in honor of Veterans Day on Friday at the Loxley Civic Center.

Veterans from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Granada, Persian Gulf, UN Peacekeeper (Bosnia, Servia, Somalia and the Middle East); Iraq/Afghanistan and Cold War veterans were honored, along with wives and widows of veterans.

Following a potluck meal with dinner music provided by the City Rhythm Big Band, the American Heritage Girls led the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem and special music was provided by the Wallace Family, Whitney, Lauren and Grant Wallace.

Taps to honor fallen soldiers was played by Brian Parnell. Prayers were offered by Gary Byrd and the Rev. Jim Batchelor.

Veterans carried the flags for each branch of the military, Paul Wingard, Army; Buford Blackmon, Navy; Vander Mixon, Coast Guard, Ernie Baker, Air Force; and Jimmy Driver, Marines.

This is the seventh year for the community-wide event, coordinated by Loxley Council Member Katherine Breeden on behalf of the J.O.Y. club.
