Families of children with special needs will have an opportunity to connect with crucial resources and support services during USA Health’s Disability and Child Safety Resource Fair on Tuesday, Feb. 25.

The free event will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the first-floor lobby of the Strada Patient Care Center, located at 1601 Center St.

Organized by the USA Health Department of Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics and the University of South Alabama Regional Autism Network (USARAN), the fair aims to help families navigate the often-complex network of services available for children with autism and other developmental disabilities.

“For many families, and even service providers, they may not know where to start when looking for resources for their child or loved one diagnosed with autism or some other developmental disability,” USARAN director Michelle McDaniel said in a news release. “The resource fair will give families and professionals an opportunity to stop by and speak face to face with representatives from agencies and organizations who can help to guide them to the resources they need most.”

Attendees will have access to representatives from multiple agencies, including the Mobile County Communications District/Smart 9-1-1, Mobile County Health Department, Mobile Fire-Rescue Department, Mobile Police Department, Project Lifesaver-Mobile County Sheriff’s Office, Safe Kids of South Alabama, Safe Sleep-Alabama Department of Public Health and USARAN.

The fair will provide information on a range of topics, including:

  • Informing first responders of medical, health and developmental needs
  • Child and maternal health services
  • Fire safety education for children
  • Community engagement with law enforcement
  • Safety resources for individuals with autism or other disabilities prone to wandering
  • Car seat safety checks and education
  • Safe sleep practices for infants
  • Autism-related resources, including autism ID cards

USA Health regularly hosts these events to ensure families are aware of the support available to them.
