Two young men were killed Sunday night after a pickup truck struck the electric scooter they were riding on County Road 65 south of Airport Road, according to the Foley Police Department.
Officers responded to the crash around 9 p.m. April 13 and found that a 2006 Chevy Colorado had fatally hit the scooter, which was traveling in the same direction. The victims were identified as Brandon Alexis Esquivel Palencia, 19, of New York, and Cesar Ariel Villatoro Chavez, 18, of Foley. Their next of kin were notified Monday afternoon.
According to investigators, the pickup was heading north on the two-lane roadway, where the posted speed limit is 45 mph, when the driver attempted to avoid the scooter, lost control and veered off the road. The truck came to rest in a wooded area.
Police said the driver, who was not injured, stayed at the scene and cooperated with officers. There were no signs of impairment, and no charges are being filed at this time.
“Our hearts go out to the families and all involved in this tragic accident,” the department said in a release.
The investigation remains open, and police said drivers in the area may experience detours or delays as the case continues.
