Twelve Baldwin County soccer players named to South All-Star squad

Fairhope’s Hagan, Bayside’s Cunningham, Daphne’s Clark, Gulf Shores’ Galvan fresh off trips to final four

When the Alabama High School Athletic Association announced the rosters Monday for the North-South All-Star soccer games this summer, 12 local athletes representing Daphne, Fairhope, Foley, Robertsdale, Spanish Fort, Gulf Shores, Bayside Academy, Orange Beach and St. Michael Catholic were selected, four to the girls’ team and eight to the boys’ team.

Lining up for the South All-Star girls’ squad will be Allie Fussell from Foley, Aidyn Hagan from Fairhope, Emily Smith from Robertsdale and Emma Kate Wilson from Spanish Fort. All four athletes were also recently recognized with all-state distinction by AHSAA soccer coaches where Fussell was a second-team all-state selection and the rest were all-state honorable mentions.

Representing Baldwin County in the South All-Star boys’ lineup will be Talan Galvan from Gulf Shores, Thomas Cunningham from Bayside Academy, Noah Clark from Daphne, Camden Carner from Fairhope, Lucean Pingrey from Orange Beach, Hayden Harville from Robertsdale, Ayden Kim from Spanish Fort and Matthew Drago from St. Michael Catholic. Similarly, Galvan was recently recognized with first-team all-state honors where Cunningham, Carner, Harville, Kim and Drago earned all-state honorable mentions.

Hagan, Cunningham, Clark, Galvan ended postseasons in Huntsville

A few of the local players ended their seasons only a couple of weeks ago at the final four state tournament in Huntsville. Hagan and the Pirates fell in the Class 7A state semifinals to Auburn, Galvan and the Dolphins finished as Class 5A state runners-up and both Cunningham and the Admirals (Class 4A) as well as Clark and the Trojans (Class7A) collected repeat Blue Map trophies as champions.

The South girls’ team features three athletes that competed in state title games including Katie Brightwell from Saint James (Class 1A-3A), Mally Nappier from Auburn (Class 7A) and Madison Yi from Montgomery Academy (Class 6A). Christian Barrientos from Class 6A’s Fort Payne joined the Baldwin County trio in playing for a state championship on the boys’ circuit.

They will be looking to chip away at the South’s deficit in the all-time series entering the 27th edition of the annual doubleheader. After the North All-Stars swept last year’s soccer matches, the girls’ team holds a 17-3-1 advantage and the boys’ team owns a 14-4-1 lead on the ledger.

The North-South All-Star soccer contests are set for Wednesday, July 19, at Emory Folmar Stadium in Montgomery and will be live streamed by the NFHS Network and AHSAA TV Network.

More on AHSAA All-Star Week

The four 18-member teams comprised of 2024 rising seniors were announced by Brandon Dean, Director of the Alabama High School Athletic Directors & Coaches Association (AHSADCA).

The AHSADCA, which operates under the auspices of the AHSAA will also host all-star games in basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball, cross country, tennis and golf during the All-Star Week, July 17-21. All-Star rosters for basketball, volleyball, cross country, baseball and softball have already been announced.

The 64th annual North-South All-Star Football Game was played last December at Mobile where the South won 42-7.
