Who doesn't love Southern-fried catfish? Maybe with a side of macaroni and cheese, coleslaw, hush puppies and turnip greens?

Did you know U.S. farm-raised catfish is among the top 10 seafoods consumed in the United States? Alabama is second in the nation for catfish production, which is one of the reasons the U.S. Senate celebrated this popular Southern staple by passing a resolution designating August 2024 as National Catfish Month. The resolution passed the Senate by unanimous consent on Aug. 1.

The resolution, introduced by U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) alongside U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker (R-MS) and other colleagues, highlights the contributions of the U.S. farm-raised catfish industry to the nation's economy.

Alabama plays a crucial role in this industry with 66 catfish farms spread across 15,000 acres of surface water. The state's catfish sector supports over 2,400 jobs and contributes nearly $92 million annually to the state's economy. In 2023, Alabama produced 29% of the total U.S. farm-raised catfish, amounting to 96.2 million pounds valued at $112.6 million.

"I am proud to sponsor this resolution, which showcases the great role Alabama plays in catfish farming," Tuberville said in a news release. "Alabama's catfish industry produces millions of dollars in revenue and provides thousands of jobs each year. As Alabama's voice on the AG Committee, I am committed to promoting the significant industry catfish farming plays in our great state."

The resolution not only honors Alabama's contributions but also acknowledges the broader impact of the U.S. farm-raised catfish industry, which employs nearly 10,000 people and generates over $1.9 billion in economic output nationwide. With 99% of all U.S. farm-raised catfish produced in states like Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi and Texas, the resolution highlights the importance of catfish as the largest farm-raised seafood product in the country.

Catfish farming is recognized for its sustainability and environmental friendliness, providing a reliable and affordable source of high-quality seafood year-round. The resolution also highlights catfish's nutritional benefits and its versatility in American cuisine, celebrated in a variety of regional and national recipes.
