Bayside Academy has its newest head football coach. Former Auburn quarterback Barrett Trotter was announced as the Admirals’ third head coach Thursday, Feb. 16.

Trotter brings four years of NFL coaching experience with the Rams as well as time as an offensive assistant at both his alma maters, Auburn and Briarwood Christian School in Birmingham. His wife, Katherine White-Spunner Trotter, is a 2009 graduate of Bayside Academy.

“I am grateful to the Bayside community and the administration for this opportunity to be the head coach. Our program will produce a championship culture that the student body and community can be proud of, both on and off the field,” Trotter said in a release. “I look forward to building relationships with the team and developing men of high character committed to excellence.”

The Admirals finished 6-5 last season with a 4-3 mark in Class 4A Region 1 where an early-season win over St. Michael Catholic proved to win them a playoff tiebreaker. The head coaching job was vacant at Bayside Academy after Phil Lazenby stepped down in December.

In his first season at Briarwood, Trotter worked with Clemson signee Christopher Vizzina who helped quarterback the Lions to a 10-2 record with nearly 400 points scored.

As a player at Briarwood, Trotter was a Class 5A all-state quarterback and Mr. Football finalist before he went to the plains. As a Tiger, Trotter backed up Cam Newton during Auburn’s run to the national championship in 2010 before being named the starter in 2011. The Tigers finished 8-2 that season with a win in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl where Trotter finished the year with 1,184 passing yards on 92 completions with 11 touchdowns.

Trotter’s next assignment involves taking over a program with a young core and a four-year postseason streak on the line. Bayside Academy’s Head of School, Scott Phillipps, said he came away from the interview excited at some of Trotter’s intangibles.

“More than anything, we were looking for a man who would buy in to our culture and love and develop the young men in our football program,” Phillipps said in the release. “Everyone who engaged in our search knew football, but Coach Trotter stood out in regard to his passion and integrity.”

“We know great things are in store for our football program. We are truly blessed to welcome Barrett Trotter to Bayside,” Admiral Athletic Director Jamie Ferguson added.
