Thomas Hospital holds groundbreaking for new Fairhope patient tower

FAIRHOPE —Thomas Hospital in Fairhope is getting bigger and held a groundbreaking ceremony for an expansion of its facilities last week.

The expansion will be a new patient tower that will include 25 general medical surgical beds, an on-call physician and employee handicapped parking area and space to accommodate future growth and expansion.

Along with hospital staff and officials, local and state leaders were in attendance, including Fairhope Mayor Sherry Sullivan, Daphne Mayor Robin LeJuene, U.S. Rep. Barry Moore (R-AL-1) and District 96 state Rep. Matt Simpson (R-Fairhope).

With the rapid growth of Baldwin County, it has become apparent that Thomas Hospital needed to adapt, so the new expansion hopes to create additional space that will fulfill the needs of this hospital so they can address the rising demand of health care in the area.

"There's a lot of demand in the county for health care services," Thomas Hospital President Ormond Thompson said. "It's going to give us a capacity to where people don't have to stay in the emergency room overnight or things for beds."

Mark Nix, president of Infirmary Health Systems, said they have invested over $300 million into Baldwin County to grow their footprint and to be the leading health care provider for locals and families in the community. This investment also includes a future 110,000-plus-square-foot facility in Daphne that will house a surgery center and imaging center.

The new expansion is expected to take 16-18 months to complete, with officials saying it will create over 30-40 new jobs in the health care industry.

"I just want to want to applaud Thomas Hospital for continuing to meet the needs of our community and for doing that with compassion and professionalism and providing that excellent care for our community that we deserve, that our citizens deserve, and that we always expect, and just like Fairhope, how we strive to provide that quality of life," Sullivan said. "Thank you for continuing to provide the quality of care that our citizens deserve and our families expect."
