Alabama’s top culinary talent will compete for glory, cash and a chance to represent the state on a national stage when the 10th Annual Alabama Seafood Cook-Off fires up Monday, May 5 at The Wharf in Orange Beach.

Hosted for the first time by Sweet Grown Alabama, the state’s non-profit agricultural branding program, the event kicks off at 6 p.m. at Marlin Circle (23101 Canal Road). The cook-off, formerly managed by the Alabama Seafood Marketing Commission, returns with fresh energy and a new tie-in to the local farming community.

Four chef teams from across the state have been selected to compete, each challenged to craft a dish featuring Alabama Gulf seafood and at least one locally grown ingredient. The winner will take home a $2,500 cash prize and a custom plaque, along with the honor of representing Alabama at the nationally recognized Great American Seafood Cook-Off in New Orleans.

THE COMPETING CHEFS

Megan Vanderford, sous chef at Odette in Florence, began her culinary journey writing recipes for her father’s weekly newspaper. From fast food to fine dining, Vanderford worked her way up the kitchen ranks, recently earning a promotion to sous. She draws inspiration from her young daughter, Aurelia.

Ben Rosen, chef de partie at The Depot in Auburn, discovered his love for food as a runner at Legends Steakhouse in Florence. After launching a catering business in Opelika, he joined Chef Scott Simpson’s team at The Depot. Within months, Rosen climbed the ranks, earning multiple promotions and competing in the 2024 Alabama Seafood Cook-Off.

Emilio Urban, chef at Coastal Orange Beach, has worked in kitchens since age 13. Previously chef de cuisine at Fisher’s Upstairs, he trained under renowned chefs Bill Briand and Mike Andrzejewski. With roots in both Mexico and the American South, Urban views food as a deeply personal, storytelling experience.

Austin Salinas, chef at Hatch Huntsville, brings bold flavors and southern pride to the table. A culinary arts graduate from the University of North Alabama, Salinas has worked across Alabama’s kitchens for eight years. He’s a passionate advocate for culinary education and community outreach.

THE JUDGES

The panel includes Kyle Ogden, winner of the 2024 Alabama Seafood Cook-Off; Bob Carlton, senior feature writer for Alabama Media Group; Lindsey Noto King, owner of Feast Birmingham; and Nicole McLaughlin, culinary producer for AllRecipes.com.

The Alabama Seafood Cook-Off is open to the public, offering locals and visitors a chance to watch top chefs in action and celebrate the state’s rich culinary and agricultural heritage.
