Stock up on weather preparedness items this tax-free weekend

If you're looking to save money and mark off certain items off your shopping list, this is the weekend to do it.

Alabama's Severe Weather Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday is set for Feb. 21-23, one of two statewide sales tax holidays of which retailers in Alabama are required to participate and cannot charge any waived sales taxes on items that are legally tax-exempt. The other weekend is July 18-20 and focuses on back-to-school items.

This will be the state's 14th severe weather preparedness sales tax holiday. It begins at 12:01 a.m. Friday, Feb. 21, and ends at midnight, Sunday, Feb. 23, allowing Alabama shoppers to stock up tax-free on common supplies costing less than $60 that "every home and business needs to prepare for a natural disaster or even a general emergency," according to the Alabama Retail Association.

Generators costing $1,000 or less also can be purchased free of the state's 4% sales tax during the three-day tax holiday.

Local sales taxes may still apply, but local governments can vote to participate in addition. According to the Alabama Department of Revenue, Baldwin County is participating, meaning there will be no local sales tax during the weekend. Municipalities that also voted to participate include Bay Minette, Daphne, Elberta, Fairhope, Foley, Gulf Shores, Loxley, Magnolia Springs, Orange Beach, Perdido Beach, Robertsdale, Silverhill, Spanish Fort and Summerdale.

Eligible items that are $60 or less, per item, include: AAA-cell batteries, AA-cell batteries, C-cell batteries, D-cell batteries, 6-volt batteries and 9-volt batteries; cellular phone battery; cellular phone charger; portable self-powered or battery-powered radio, two-way radio, weatherband radio or NOAA weather radio; portable self-powered light source, including battery-powered flashlights, lanterns or emergency glow sticks; tarpaulin; plastic sheeting; plastic drop cloths; other flexible, waterproof sheeting; ground anchor system, such as bungee cords or rope, or tie-down kit; Duct tape; plywood, window film or other materials specifically designed to protect window coverings; non-electric food storage cooler or water storage container; non-electric can opener; artificial ice; blue ice; ice packs; reusable ice; self-contained first aid kit; fire extinguisher; smoke detector; carbon monoxide detector; and gas or diesel fuel tank or container.

Any portable generator and power cords, used to provide light or communications or preserve food in the event of a power outage, with a sales price of $1,000 or less, are eligible.

Non-eligible items include coin batteries and automobile and boat batteries.
