For those looking to embrace the great outdoors in 2025, Gulf State Park is inviting adventurers of all ages to participate in its annual First Day Hike on New Year's Day.
The family-friendly event offers a chance to connect with nature while kicking off the year on a healthy, active note.
This year's hike will begin at the Orange Beach Sportsplex, located at 4385 William Silvers Parkway, at 9 a.m. Participants will embark on a two-mile guided trek along the scenic Twin Bridges Trail, ending at the Butterfly Garden. Along the way, hikers can enjoy the park's rich natural beauty, and children will have the chance to explore the Butterfly Garden's climbing boulders. The garden also features a screened-in picnic area, perfect for family snacks or a quiet moment to unwind.
The Gulf State Park event is part of a broader initiative under Alabama State Parks, which will host First Day Hikes at 12 locations statewide. From a sunrise hike at Oak Mountain State Park to the Bald Rock Overlook trail at Cheaha State Park, these hikes aim to inspire a love for nature and outdoor activity. The First Day Hikes are also part of a national program that takes place in all 50 states, celebrating the New Year with outdoor exploration.
"Alabama State Parks offer some of the finest hiking trails found anywhere, and First Day Hikes are a great way to explore Alabama's natural beauty while beginning the new year with exercise," Alabama State Parks Director Matthew Capps said in a news release. "With many of our parks offering a First Day Hike again this year, there's something for everyone."
At Gulf State Park, the experience doesn't end with the hike. Families are encouraged to join the park's 2025 Nature Reconnect Initiative by picking up a mini nature journal at the Nature Center. Participants can set a goal to attend 25 park events or programs throughout the year, earning a place on the Nature Center Wall of Fame for their efforts.
Hikers are advised to dress for seasonal weather, wear closed-toe shoes or hiking boots, and bring water, snacks and hiking poles if needed. While registration is required, the event at Gulf State Park is free, though other Alabama parks may charge a daily admission fee. All hikes are subject to change or cancellation due to inclement weather.
