Standing Ovation: Dedicated fan holds ground for 12 hours to see Calvin Harris at Hangout Festival

GULF SHORES — Hangout Music Festival 2023 featured many widely popular artists, but one caught the eye of a devoted fan who was willing to wait hours to catch a glimpse of their performance.

When Tennessee native Olivia McMurtry saw that Calvin Harris was coming to Hangout this year, she immediately bought her ticket.

“The lineup is what got me here. It was just awesome,” McMurtry said.

She knew she wanted to get the best seat in the house to see the Scottish DJ.

On the third and final day of the festival, McMurtry arrived at 11:15 a.m. and quickly ran to the front of the stage to hold her ground until Calvin Harris took the stage at 9:30 p.m.

“I have to stand in the same spot so I don’t lose it. People are ruthless out here. Everybody wants to get the best view,” McMurtry said.

She also added that other attendees were beginning to push her and try to take her spot, but she was not planning on moving.

In order to keep her spot, the Calvin Harris fan had friends and even staff who were willing to bring her food and drinks to stay hydrated during the heat.
McMurtry added, “The staff is so sweet and checks up on you and are so attentive.”

After Calvin Harris finished his last song and 12 hours of planting her feet in the same spot, McMurtry said it was worth the wait.

“I would wait again if I could. He played all of his main songs, and everyone was going crazy the entire time," she said. "I hope to see him return to Hangout.”
