Powerlifter Wise, Flag Football team Baldwin Bandits return from Orlando's USA Games with medals

Special Olympic athletes were honored at the June 23 meeting of the Baldwin County Board of Education for their achievements at the USA Games in Orlando earlier this month.

Powerlifter Jerry Wise won a gold medal and three fourth-place medals for his bench press, deadlift and squat totals. Wise bench pressed 75 pounds, deadlifted 107.5 pounds and squatted 55 pounds for a total of 237.5 pounds, which was also good for fourth place in his division.

Baldwin County Schools’ Unified Flag Football team, the Baldwin Bandits, earned silver medals for their run through the national competition. Team members included #3 Atrevien Morrissette, #18 Qualin McCants, #5 Jullian Williams, #10 Isaiah Featherston, #12 LaShavion Brown and #9 Jonathan Simon. Coach Shawn O'Connor and team captains joined them in being honored at the meeting.

On the first day of games, the Bandits beat Missouri 2 by a 19-0 score but fell to Maryland 44-0 the next day. In the Unified Team Competition, the Bandits beat Texas 9-0 heading into the finals. In the first round, the Bandits fell to Arizona 1, 26-12, but bounced back to beat Massachusetts 19-8 and secure a second-place finish in their division.
