Fairhope seals victory in final minutes again, Bayside Academy uses 26 unanswered to move to 2-0

Half of Baldwin County’s football teams earned wins last Friday night, including the Spanish Fort Toros who used the first win of the Chase Smith era, 16-6 over Blount, to notch their first win within Class 6A Region 1.

In non-region play, Fairhope once again won in the final minutes when Qualin McCants ran for two fourth-quarter scores to help the Pirates move to 2-0 with a 38-31 win over Gulf Breeze, Fla.

The Bayside Academy Admirals outlasted the Pike Liberal Patriots in a game of runs and rallied for 26 unanswered points to register a 33-15 win their second road victory in as many tries.

Toros top Leopards, 16-6

Spanish Fort wasted no time getting in front of the playoff picture after it earned a region-opening win on a muddy field. Jacob Godfrey’s 13-yard rushing touchdown made the Toros’ lead 9-0 just before halftime.

The Spanish Fort defense held strong all night and it was only on a fourth-and-goal reverse play that Blount crossed the goal line in the fourth quarter. Nehemiah Hixon’s rushing touchdown with a minute to play sealed the first victory for Smith, the former Toro assistant coach, as the head man on the Hill.

Pirates win in final frame again, 38-31

After the pick-six that won the game on the final play of the season-opening game, Fairhope once again secured a win in the fourth quarter. McCants provided rushing touchdowns with 11:19 and 3:18 left in regulation after he added a receiving touchdown and Preston Godfrey returned a kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown earlier in the game.

The Pirates will see another Floridian team this Friday, back at Fairhope Municipal Stadium.

Road warrior Admirals prevail, 33-15

In a game of touchdown strings, Bayside Academy used a run of 26 unanswered points to down Pike Liberal for another win away from its home field.

Joey Jones started things with a 33-yard field goal before Sammy Dunn scored a 16-yard rush and the Admirals registered a safety. Bayside Academy turned two turnovers directly into points with two rushing touchdowns from Tait Moore following a sack-fumble and interception from Drew Murphy.

Cardinals claw Chieftains, 36-0

In another bounce-back win, St. Michael Catholic avenged its opening loss to Gulf Shores with a defensive shutout of Chickasaw’s offense while the Cardinals’ offense threw a slew of touchdown passes to earn the non-region win.

It wasn’t just quarterback Josh Murphy who was on the throwing end of a score, as Fall Sports Preview cover boy Braylan Green took a reverse handoff in the backfield and delivered a strike to a wide-open Sam Murray to start the touchdown flood.

Murphy then delivered scoring passes to Ezra Sexton, Cooper Helper and Green before Sexton ran for the bookending score. St. Michael moves onto a big local matchup against Bayside Academy to open play within Class 5A Region 1.

Dolphins take second road win, 45-26

Although originally scheduled for a home game, field conditions changed Gulf Shores’ region-opening game to an away game in Citronelle but it ended up being the second road win for the Dolphins. Quarterback Brendon Byrd threw two touchdown passes to Ronnie Royal who also ran for two touchdowns.

Ronnie Royal III caught seven passes for 142 yards and two TDS and also rushed 2 times for 37 yards and two TDs. JR Gardner rushed 11 times for 67 yards and a TD.

Gulf Shores will try its second take on hosting its first home region game this Friday against the Faith Academy Rams.
