With a 49-35 win over Benjamin Russell at home Friday night, the Spanish Fort Toros advanced to the second round of the Class 6A state playoffs and improved to 16-1 all-time in the first round of the postseason as well as remained undefeated at home in the playoff opener at 13-0.

Spanish Fort senior running back Sawyer Wilson scored in both halves (67 and 4 yards) before classmate EJ King delivered a pair of rushing touchdowns (38 and 20 yards) in the fourth quarter to help the Toros put away the victory. Junior Justin Bonner provided a 27-yard pass to senior Jacob LeMoine to open the scoring for the hosts.

Junior quarterback Aaden Shamburger threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to senior Nehemiah Hixon and ripped off a 45-yard touchdown run to help tie the game at 28-28 with 7:35 left in the third quarter. Wilson’s second score with 7:30 left in the fourth gave Spanish Fort a lead it would not relinquish en route to a fourth 40-point effort this season.

The Toros move on to face the Hueytown Golden Gophers who used a 28-21 win over Percy Julian in the first round to record a sixth-straight victory this season. Hueytown is set to host its first second-round playoff game since 2019 when the Golden Gophers beat Eufaula 56-49 in overtime.

Spanish Fort will be looking for its first second-round victory since 2020 when the Toros took down Helena 40-7 at home. In its 17-year playoff streak, Spanish Fort is 13-2 overall in second-round games with the two losses coming in the most recent away matchups in 2023 and 2021.

Bayside Academy Admirals 36, Hale County Wildcats 6

Senior SMU commit Miles Uter caught three touchdown passes from sophomore quarterback Bo Miller as Bayside Academy raced out to a 36-0 lead before Hale County found the end zone Thursday night at Freedom Field in Daphne.

Miller threw a pair of 8-yard scores in the first half before lobbing a jump ball that Uter plucked out of the sky over his defender to complete a 28-yard touchdown which capped the Admirals’ scoring. Miller also delivered a 90-yard scoring pass to sophomore running back Caid Lyons who made the catch near the line of scrimmage before breaking tackles and outrunning the Wildcat defense to the end zone.

Bayside Academy senior Noah Cain also provided a spark on special teams with a 48-yard punt return for a touchdown punctuated by a broken tackle at the goal line where Cain ran over a potential tackler from Hale County.

The Admiral defense used a sixth single-digit effort of the season to lower their average to 12.7 points allowed per game.

Bayside Academy earned its first playoff win since 2021 and advanced to face the Alabama Christian Eagles who took down Glenwood 46-42 in the first round. Alabama Christian is in the postseason for the ninth-straight year and owns a 3-2 record in the second round at home. The Admirals are 4-4 overall in the second round but 3-1 in away games.
