Spanish Fort High School senior awarded $10,000 scholarship from The Wharf

ORANGE BEACH — Denver Persinger, a senior at Spanish For High School, was awarded the second-ever The Wharf Scholarship, worth $10,000. He plans to attend the University of Denver in Colorado, pursuing a degree in Economics.
"The Wharf is proud to continue our scholarship program for the second year," said Kristen Hammack, management team leader, The Wharf. "Denver exemplified the characteristics of an 'exceptional student,' and we are proud to celebrate his accomplishments and involvement. Each of the applicants were standout students and have certainly contributed to the community while also prioritizing their studies. The Wharf believes in supporting our future leaders and commends the Class of 2022 for their achievements."
Persigner has maintained a 4.0 grade point average, scored a 30 on his ACT and exceled in athletics as part of the Spanish Fort High School Wrestling Team. His teachers know him as a "hard working, selfless and determined student, who is an out-of-the-box thinker and remained humble despite all of his accomplishments."
Persinger and his mother founded "One More Moment," a nonprofit that aids families in the local community navigate crises with available support and treatment options.
Persinger was the Bryant Jordan Scholarship Nominee, Scholar-Athlete of the Week, AP Student of the Month, French Honor Society President, Math Honor Society member, Scholars Bowl member and has volunteered with Prodisee Pantry and youth athletic programs. He has also worked 600+ hours at a quick-service food establishment in the area.
The Wharf Scholarship was announced in January as part of The Wharf's charity giving campaign, "The Wharf's Anchor Campaign: #AnchorForCommunity." Over 90 high school seniors across Baldwin County applied. Applicants were evaluated based on community involvement, academic achievement and their response to a written essay from three provided prompts.
Runner-up Christle Howard of Foley High School was awarded $500.
