South Baldwin Regional Medical Center is now Baldwin Health.
Hospital representatives unveiled the new name to mark the completion of the tower that has been under construction for more than a year. The hospital located along N. McKenzie Street is increasing its capacity by opening a new nearly 200,000-square-foot expansion of its campus later this month.
The new addition was revealed at an event on Tuesday morning, where those in attendance had the opportunity to tour the new facility. Notable people in attendance include Baldwin Health CEO Margaret Roley, chairman of the Healthcare Authority Board Clark Stewart and Foley Mayor Ralph Hellmich.
The $250 million expansion will enhance the hospital’s capacity and introduce additional services. This multi-story project will feature new surgical facilities, a dedicated unit for women and children, and expanded space to accommodate more patients, including in the intensive care unit.
“There has been no stone left unturned and no dollars spared,” Margaret Roley said at the unveiling event. “I think this is something that you as a community will be so proud of and so deserving in the next years to come.”
Roley said the hospital will begin moving patients into the new wing on Saturday and will be open for additional services on Oct. 28.
While thanking many people involved in the creation and construction of the hospital’s new expansion, Roley also took time to thank the medical staff for their services, because without them, South Baldwin Regional Medical Center wouldn’t be where it is today.
“Brick and mortar, as I say all the time, are a piece of the puzzle, but the glue that holds it together are the employees and the medical staff that provide this care to the community,” Roley said. “So thank you to each of you.”
Stewart said community support has always been a key element of the success of the hospital. The hospital began with the donation of the property on which the initial building was constructed in 1958. Community members worked to raise $75,000 to help start the project.
In 2000, authority board members voted to enter a partnership with Community Health Systems to operate the hospital. Stewart said that partnership has been a key to the growth of the hospital and health care services in Foley.
The South Baldwin Medical Group, which will be renamed Baldwin Health Medical Group, has opened 25 locations across Baldwin County, including 10 new locations that have opened within the past three years alone.
