Snook Family YMCA sets reopening date after long recovery from Hurricane Sally damages

FOLEY — Those who have been anxiously anticipating the day they could return to the Snook Family YMCA don't have much longer to wait.
The facility will reopen on Wednesday, March 30. There will be open house receptions Monday, March 28 and Tuesday, March 29 from 8 - 10 a.m., 12 - 1 p.m., and 3 - 6 p.m. on both dates.
The building was devastated in 2020 due to Hurricane Sally. The storm tore patches off the roof, allowing water to flood down into nearly every inch of the interior. Following the storm, the interior had to be completely gutted. Demolition inside the building began in April 2021. The construction phase began shortly after but was met with major delays due to supply chain issues and construction crews affected by COVID-19.
"The YMCA focuses on Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility," said Sue Sanders, CEO, YMCA of South Alabama. "Reopening the John McClure Snook Family YMCA will once again exemplify these tenants in our community. Seniors can enhance their health and socially gather. Parents of young children can safely place youth in responsible child watch facilities, thus affording them the opportunity to strengthen overall familial wellness. By offering jobs and focusing on holistic employee recognition, the Y will assist community members in attaining full job market potential, which will resonate throughout South Baldwin County."
During the two open houses, the community will get the chance to meet staff members, tour the renovated facility and get reacquainted with the Y.
"As we have navigated and poised ourselves for this day, we find it necessary to have our branch services grow with our membership base," Sanders said in an email. "Due to several factors – the COVID-19 pandemic, difficulty acquiring staff, and the economic difficulties we are now facing, our operational model, for the present, will be adjusted."
Group exercise classes are expected to begin in April, but the actual start date will be determined based on membership at the time.
