SILVERHILL — The Silverhill Veterans Memorial Organization spread a little cheer this holiday season with its second annual Help a Family campaign.
“It means a whole lot to us to be able to give back to our community,” said SVMO President Frankie Kucera. “We want all veterans and their families to know that we are here to support them and if they need anything, we are always here to help.”
SVMO Vice President Danny Murphy, his wife Chris and son Josh delivered a meal on Thanksgiving to a couple needing help.
In December, Kucera delivered seven bags of Satsumas to the William F. Green Veterans Home in Bay Minette. The satsumas were donated by Craig Goolsby of Silverhill.
SVMO officers and members also delivered Christmas presents to a family in the area along with a $300 donation by members of the SVMO.
Originally placed in 2017, the Silverhill Veterans Memorial, located in Paul Anderson Park, across from town hall, was dedicated to veterans from Silverhill and the surrounding areas.
Three 4-foot by 8-foot stones with the names of nearly 650 veterans were put in place in December of 2019 and dedicated in January of 2020.
A fourth stone with an additional 240 names is in the process of being made, Kucera said, and should be put in place sometime early in 2022.
“We’ve already got 75 names to be added to a fifth stone and are looking to add more,” he said. “There are veterans from all over Baldwin County included in this memorial and we are here to serve them.”
Any veteran or someone who knows of a veteran who would like their name added to the memorial can contact Kucera at 251-215-9630. If you would like to donate to the project you can mail your contribution to the Silverhill Veterans Memorial Organization Inc., P.O. Box 94, Silverhill, AL 36576.
