SILVERHILL — The Silverhill Town Council recently approved the next step in the process for residents to be able to make payments online.

At its meeting Monday, Oct. 18, the council voted to authorize Mayor Jared Lyles to sign an agreement with Govt Portal which will provide a link on the city’s website for residents who wish to make online court payments.

“Hopefully this will reduce the number of people who appear in court and will relieve some of the stress on our court system,” Lyles said.

According to the proposal provided by the company, the link would be set up at no cost to the town and there would be no contract, meaning the town would not have to renew after a certain period of time.

Lyles said the company charges individuals a 2.65% fee to individuals who pay online.

Town clerk Nikki Haigler said several local municipalities use Govt Portal for online court payments and it is the only company that is compatible with the current software the town uses.

At its meeting Oct. 4 the council voted to contract with Front Porch to revamp the town’s website, which will include an option to pay bills online.

Customers will also have access to an app that will link to the town’s website after the council voted Oct. 4 to contract with OneAppWay. The company, which has recently contracted with other municipalities in Baldwin County, such as Robertsdale and Magnolia Springs, agreed to set up the app at no cost with a $75 monthly fee. The app will be provided at no cost to customers.

Customers will be able to pay bills through the app and the town will also use the app to alert residents of any happenings in the town.

Haigler said once the link is set up on the town’s website it will automatically be linked to the app.

In other business Oct. 18, the council:

  • Approved an intergovernmental service agreement with the Baldwin County Commission to provide voting machines for municipal elections.
  • Authorized Superintendent of Utilities Scottie Smith to purchase equipment for the town’s garbage truck at a cost of $3,075, plus $675 for installation, for a total cost of $3,745.
  • Tabled renewal of internet support with Datatrust.
