Cancer doesn't just impact individuals — it shatters families, disrupts lives and creates challenges that can feel insurmountable.

But the Baldwin County community is coming together to crack open hope and shuck cancer for good.
The American Cancer Society is hosting its inaugural Shuck Cancer of South Alabama event at Oak Hollow Farm on April 3, offering an evening of food, drinks and live music. The event, set for 6-9 p.m., will feature an oyster-tasting experience, bourbon tastings and live entertainment. Proceeds will benefit Access to Care Programs in Alabama, which provide transportation, lodging and other critical resources to cancer patients and their families.

Tickets are $75 and can be purchased at https://shuckcancersouthal.acsgala.org/tickets-donations/. Additional details will be shared on the American Cancer Society Shuck Cancer Baldwin County Facebook page.

Local restaurants and caterers are invited to get in on the action by donating prepared oysters and non-oyster dishes. Participating businesses will receive recognition at the event and on social media. Those interested in contributing can contact Mary Waldrop at Mary.Waldrop@cancer.org.

The American Cancer Society has made strides in supporting cancer patients in Alabama. In 2023, ACS invested over $258,000 in transportation and lodging grants to health system partners in the state. These funds helped more than 1,500 families access essential cancer treatments by removing financial and logistical barriers.

Before the main event, supporters can get their feet wet at Fairhope Brewing Company on Feb. 12, from 6 to 8 p.m. The Shuck Cancer Kickoff Party will introduce the event's honorees and feature beer, food and community celebration. Tickets are $20 and include two drinks and food. They are available online and at the door. Fairhope Brewing Company is located at 914 Nichols Ave.
