Sewing group delivers early Christmas present for seniors

ROBERTSDALE — Christmas is coming a little early for several seniors in Robertsdale, thanks to a donation from a local sewing group.

On Tuesday, Oct. 26, members of the Sit-N-Sew group, a sub-group of Stitch-N-Friends, delivered 20 quilts, 60 placemats and 40 napkins to the George P. Thames Adult Activity Center.

Amy Ochello, senior activities coordinator with the City of Robertsdale, said the items would be delivered with Christmas care packages for shut-ins in the Robertsdale area served by the center. There are about 20 to 25 residents served by the center with weekly meals and wellness checks.

“You have no idea how much these items are appreciated,” Ochello said.

Barbara Landers with Sit-N-Sew said the group gathers the fourth Tuesday of every month. The larger group meets the second Tuesday of every month, both at the Adult Activity Center.

In addition to what was delivered Oct. 26, she estimates the group has nearly 100 more items to be delivered to various organization around the area, including the Robertsdale Fire Department, Robertsdale Police Department, Child Advocacy Center/C.A.R.E. House and Catholic Social Services, among others.

“We’ll keep going until we run out of items to donate,” she said, “then we’ll start over again for next year.”
