In the spirit of Helmut Schmidt's words, "The biggest room in the world is the room for improvement," National Recovery Month reminds us that no one is perfect, and we all have the opportunity to grow and enhance our lives through recovery.
Established in 1989, National Recovery Month is an annual observance dedicated to promoting evidence-based treatment and recovery practices. This September, the month celebrates the strength of the nation's recovery community and acknowledges the commitment of service providers and communities working tirelessly to make recovery possible.
The event, led by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), focuses on raising public awareness about mental health and addiction recovery, while providing resources and support for individuals and families affected by substance use disorders.
Each year during Recovery Month, SAMHSA launches new initiatives and announces grant funding to further enhance treatment options. The organization partners with both private and public entities to highlight stories of success in long-term recovery and emphasizes that recovery is attainable for anyone.
This year's theme, "Every Person, Every Family, Every Community," reinforces the message that recovery is possible for all. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) supports this idea, stressing that treatment and recovery not only help individuals heal but also enable families and communities to thrive.
