Senior groups resume activities in June, July


ROBERTSDALE, Alabama — For the first time in over a year, area senior adult groups are hosting activities after Gov. Kay Ivey lifted statewide mandates on June 1.


The George P. Thames Adult Activity Center/Robertsdale Senior Center at 22651 E. Chicago St. in Robertsdale announced its opening on June 1 and began hosting activities at the center on June 7, said Mary Williams at the center.

“We just want people to know that we are open, and they are welcome to come, share time together and get active again,” she said.

The center will host its first monthly Birthday Bash since March of last year on Wednesday, June 16 beginning at noon, which will include a meal, special gifts for those who have a birthday in June and birthday cake.

Other activities at the center include exercise from 8:30 to 9:30 every Monday and Thursday, Bingo beginning at noon on Tuesdays (there will not be Bingo on June 22) and trivia at noon on Thursdays.

The center will be closed on June 24 and 25 and there will be lunch and a movie shown at noon on June 30.

Daily, weekly, monthly and special events for adults over age 50 are hosted at the center and at the PZK Hall on Alabama 104 in Robertsdale.

Silverhill will host its monthly lunches at noon the second Thursday of every month beginning July 8.

Senior activities coordinator Mary deLaunay said for the first month, instead of pot-luck, lunch will be prepared by the senior ladies.

In July, lunch will be an indoor 4th of July picnic, with hot dogs, baked beans, Cole slaw, a variety of other sides and deserts.

Senior birthdays and anniversaries will be celebrated, along with a short program with information for seniors.


The Loxley Civic Center, located at 4198 Municipal Park Drive is currently hosting the town’s youth summer program in June with hopes of resuming senior adult activities in July, said senior activities coordinator Beryl Allen.

Loxley Senior Services offers a variety of activities and membership costs $5 per person per year.

Activities have included Tuesday morning breakfasts, art classes, Senior Lunch Bunch, a senior monthly birthday party, senior trips, a monthly senior pot-luck lunch, Coffee and Tea with Beryl and a free exercise program, along with various club activities.
