FAIRHOPE - Do you have a 10th - 12th grader who is interested in the world of aviation? Is your student fascinated with airplanes and driven to learn more about what goes into their construction? Do they dream of sending others up in a craft that they built? If yes, then don’t miss the opportunity to see what The Academy at the Fairhope Airport has to offer during an upcoming open house.
The open house will take place at the Fairhope Airport on Tuesday, Jan. 25. beginning at 5:30 p.m. Program information and tours will begin at 5:45 p.m. The Academy offers programs in aviation, welding, electrical and instrumentation, and is open to Baldwin County students in grades 10 - 12.
Students who enter into the program are committed to spending half the day in high school classrooms and half in college courses through Baldwin County School’s Fairhope Academy program. The Academy was launched in 2015 through a partnership between Coastal Alabama Community College, Baldwin County Public Schools and The Fairhope Airport Authority.
Students who complete the program walk away with the majority of classes needed to earn an associate in applied science degree in airframe technology.
Tenth grade students who enroll in the program will complete seven of the nine AMT courses needed for airframe certification. Beginning the program in 10th grade saves students $900 per course, as opposed to waiting until freshman year of college. Upon graduating high school, Academy students have a nearly completed college certification, and are prepared to sit for the Federal Aviation Administration’s exam for certification as an aviation maintenance technician with airframe endorsement.
“This program gives these kids such an enormous head start,” said Ken Callais, an Academy instructor with Coastal Alabama Community College. “When they do well here, they progress quickly down that career path.”
