Savanna The Restaurant at the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo in Gulf Shores is closing its doors.
A social media post announcing the decision on Saturday, May 31, said they "could not see a way forward in our current situation" among reasons for deciding to cease operations.
"We want to thank our loyal customers, our staff and everyone that helped make Savanna a truly special place in our hearts," the announcement said.
The zoo restaurant, which is accessible to the public without a ticket to the zoo, originally started as the Safari Club before Chef John Davis arrived in Gulf Shores and become involved, reopening the establishment as Savanna in September 2023 with elements reminiscent of his former concept in Gulf Shores, Sunset Cork Room. Savanna served lunch, brunch and dinner and featured Davis' signature style of clean, contemporary cooking with a French influence.
Davis moved to Gulf Shores with his wife after he was laid off in the food service management industry during COVID-19 and she was hired as general manager of The Wharf Springhill Suites. He started working with Nina at Sunset Cork Room, a longtime establishment in the area. When she was ready to retire, he bought the business and moved it to the zoo for a larger space after the Cork Room building was sold.
The restaurant is already closed but will be selling off their remaining wine and beer inventory at cost. Those interested in purchasing bottles can visit the restaurant, 20499 Oak Rd E., on Sunday, June 1, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. while also having the opportunity to say goodbye.
