A sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) occurred on Saturday, March 29, in Foley, after a plug left in the gravity sewer collection system during construction caused the issue.
The overflow happened at a sanitary sewer manhole located near 1005 Almond Circle.
According to officials from the Utilities Board of the City of Foley, the plug, which was installed during construction by the Developer, remained in place after the gravity sewer main was conveyed to Riviera Utilities. This oversight led to the 200-gallon overflow, which entered a storm drain and eventually flowed into a tributary that drains into Wolf Creek.
In response to the incident, the Utilities Board emphasized its commitment to following state and federal standards when addressing overflows. Residents are advised to exercise caution when using the affected bodies of water for recreational purposes. The Board recommends thoroughly cooking any fish or seafood caught in these areas and washing hands well after handling them.
For more information or questions about the SSO, residents can contact the Utilities Board of the City of Foley at (251) 943-5001.
