Former JV boys’ basketball coach to take over reins of girls’ varsity program

Maurice Mitchell was announced as the Robertsdale Golden Bears’ newest head girls’ basketball coach last Wednesday, July 6.

Mitchell graduated from Robertsdale High School in 2010 and previously served as the junior varsity head boys’ basketball coach for the last five years.

“I am a native of Robertsdale for 20-plus years and graduated from RHS in 2010. I will be going into my second year working in the Special Education department at RHS and this will be my sixth year coaching at my alma mater,” Mitchell said in a welcome post. “I have been the head boys’ JV basketball coach for the previous five years, and this will be my first year taking command of our girls’ program. I am excited for the opportunity to grow, not only this program, but girls’ basketball in this community! Go Bears!”

Last year, the Golden Bears finished 7-19 overall and lost all seven of their games in Class 6A’s Area 2. After the biennial realignment of the Alabama High School Athletic Association, next season’s Area 2 will swap champions where the McGill-Toolen Yellowjackets – last year’s Class 6A Area 1 champion – will replace the Gulf Shores Dolphins – last year’s Class 6A Area 2 champion – who dropped down to Class 5A.
