Alan Redpath shares the following in Victorious Christian Service: "It is a tremendous moment in a Christian's life when he can honestly look up into the face of God and say, 'Yes, Lord, You are right and I am wrong,' when he stops arguing with God, and drops his controversy. He says, 'Lord, yes. I've got what I deserved in this situation. You are right; I am wrong.' That is the thing for which God has been working in your life and mine from the moment of our conversion."
Proverbs 21:30 reads, "There is no wisdom or understanding or counsel against the LORD." This is a warning against three ways of second-guessing the sovereign God. Here are three reasons against this practice.
Second-guessing the sovereign God is foolish. Paul warns, "Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you seems to be wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, 'He catches the wise in their own craftiness;' and again, 'The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile'" (1 Corinthians 3:18-20). Remember, "There is no wisdom. . . against the LORD" (Proverbs 21:30).
Second-guessing the sovereign God is faithless. Proverbs 3:5-6 reads, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths." Hebrews 11:6 reads, "But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him." Remember, "There is no... understanding... against the LORD" (Proverbs 21:30).
Second-guessing the sovereign God is futile. Job 42:1-4 reads, "Then Job answered the Lord and said: 'I know that You can do everything, And that no purpose of Yours can be withheld from You. You asked, 'Who is this who hides counsel without knowledge?' Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand, Things too wonderful for me, which I did not know. Listen, please, and let me speak; You said, 'I will question you, and you shall answer Me.'" Remember, "There is no... counsel against the LORD" (Proverbs 21:30).
John Newton explains, "(God) has a sovereign right to do with us as He pleases; and if we consider what we are, surely we shall confess we have no reason to complain; and to those who seek Him, His sovereignty is exercised in a way of grace. All shall work together for good; everything is needful that He sends; nothing can be needful that He withholds." Charles H. Spurgeon comments, "(A Happy Christian) believes (God) to be too wise to err and too good to be unkind; he trusts Him where he cannot trace Him, looks up to Him in the darkest hour, and believes that all is well."
